Year 1 Blog

Year 1 Blog

Year 1 have had an amazing start to 2022 and we have been loving learning about lots of new, exciting topics! Here is a snapshot of what we have been learning about in English, RE and DT!

English

In English, we have been learning about the story of Norman the slug with the silly shell. We read the story as a class and created our own set of actions to help us re-tell the story. We then worked in teams to create story maps using key words and phrases and presented these to our friends. We have been generating powerful adjectives and creating different word banks to describe how Norman’s feelings change throughout the story. Building on our previous learning from our Gruffalo topic, we have also been using our SPAG knowledge to explore the different adjectives we can use to describe Norman and his variety of shells. On the next part of our writing journey, we will be planning and writing our own Norman story!

“I like the part where he finds his doughnut because he is happy” – Frankie B

“I loved the part when Norman tried the apple because he nearly ate a worm!” – Gabriel

RE

Religion lessons so far, we have been learning about the Christmas story and in particular, we have been thinking about our big question - why was Jesus’ birth so special? We worked together to imagine what being in the stable would have felt like and thought about what we may have been able to smell, touch, hear and see. We then discovered more about why Baby Jesus was sent by God as the Messiah and what this meant. To continue our learning further, in our next lesson we imagined meeting the 3 wise men. We thought of some exciting questions to ask the wise men in hope of discovering more about why they brought the gifts of gold, frankincense and Myrhh.  We used this information to focus back in on our big question and dive deeper into why Jesus’ birth was so special.

DT

DT lessons, we have been learning to create a range of working mechanism using card, split pins, glues and more. We started by learning how to make a sliding mechanism and wheel mechanism. We then continued our learning by making 2 different lever mechanisms.  We have also begun planning and creating our own children’s ‘toy’ using the working mechanisms that we have learnt. During our planning stage, we thought carefully about the purpose and audience of our ‘toy’.
