Writing:

In Year 4 this half term the children have built up their poetry writing skills. We have focussed on the use of figurative language and effective verb and adjective choices to create the bigger picture of a remarkable, natural element. The children have selected their own natural element that they think is remarkable, either because it is strong and powerful or because it is soft and delicate. They have all written some fantastic acrostic poems based on their chosen element and should be incredibly proud. We are now moving onto our Harry Potter unit where the children will be writing a diary entry in the role of Hagrid, thinking deeply about how he would feel and what reflections he would be making throughout the day and after the event.

Geography:

This half term Year 4 are becoming river experts! The children have particularly enjoyed the hands-on experience of creating and labelling the river within the classroom. Over the past few weeks the children have built upon their understanding of the processes that occur in rivers, We have honed in on erosion, transportation and deposition, which are occurring constantly and changing the shape of the river over time. The children were able to apply this understanding to the formation of oxbow lakes, ask your children how these are formed.

Welsh National Opera:

Year 4 has been very fortunate this week, when we were visited by some of the members of the Welsh National Opera who ran an interactive workshop for us. The children had the opportunity to dig deep into the Opera "Carmen". We explored the key story of this opera and even got to learn some of the songs, using our bodies to provide percussion. The children took on the role of both the prisoners and the soldiers, singing in the role and showing their emotions through their actions. We then got to show off our acting skills even further with our freeze frames. The children were divided into smaller groups and had to create a freeze frame showing what they predicted the ending of the opera would be, and what would happen to the characters we had been introduced to.  We were all incredibly impressed by this workshop and were keen to learn even more about different operas.
