Writing

Year 1 have enjoyed starting our new writing topic. This half term we are learning about ‘Norman. The slug with the silly shell’ by Sue Hendra. So far Year 1 have read the story together and created a story map, thought about a pizza being Norman’s next shell, generated adjectives and then written sentences using them. We are looking forward to thinking about other silly shells that Norman could have!

Maths

Over the last 2 weeks, Year 1 have been looking at Place Value within 50. We started by ordering the numbers to 50.. We have then used lots of different resources like dienes, numicon, counters and multilink to represent these numbers. We have talked lots about how many tens and how many ones are in a number. We also discussed crossing a 10. What happens when we reach 9? Year 1 are brilliant at counting in 10s and we have been using that knowledge to help us know what the next ten will be. You can see some fantastic pictures of our learning below.

Reading

Year 1 love Story share Fridays! Every Friday we have a Story share lesson where we listen to a new story and complete activities focussed on the story. Recently, we have been listening to Julia Donaldson stories including ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’, ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘The Snail and the Whale’.  We voted for our favourite Julia Donaldson story. The winner was ‘The Snail and the Whale’.

Science

As mentioned on a previous blog, Year 1 are going to be exploring the different seasons during our science lessons. Recently, we went on another nature walk around our school grounds to see if we could use our senses to help us understand which season we are currently in.  We noticed that the trees had no leaves and there were no leaves on the ground. Using these clues, we then made an informed guess as to which season we are currently in. We guessed Winter! We are really looking forward to our next season walk. Which season will be next?

History

This half term Year 1 will be learning about a significant individual in our history lessons. We started this topic by looking at different picture sources and making guesses about who we thought she might have been and why she might be important. We discovered that this significant individual was Grace Darling! We then learnt that in 1838 Grace had noticed a ship that had been wreaked in a storm. She bravely decided to help her father try and rescue the survivors. While risking their own lives, Grace and her father managed to rescue 9 people. We look forward to learning more about Grace Darling as this half term continues.

Thank you for your amazing learning Year 1!
